New Tata Punch launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has officially introduced the new Punch crossover in South Africa, simplifying the model selection in the process.

The Indian manufacturer’s passenger car division relaunched in our market last year with an initial lineup of four cars, including the Punch.

At launch, the Punch was available in five specifications with prices ranging from R244,900 to R339,900.

In contrast, the new selection has dropped from five to three models, and prices now range from R224,900 to R269,900, making the Punch one of the most affordable vehicles in the country.

The new crossover features enhanced technology, contemporary SUV styling, improved safety, and a higher level of standard equipment, according to the company.

“With the all-new Punch, we’re raising expectations of what customers can get from an affordable sub-compact SUV,” said Jeffrey Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Products at Tata.

“With contemporary styling, advanced technology, enhanced safety and higher levels of equipment, the all-new Punch helps democratize features that were once limited to vehicles from segments above.”

“It challenges that compromise, delivering a significantly stronger value proposition while retaining the accessible pricing that has always been central to its appeal.’”

Engine

The Punch can be had with one of two powertrains, starting with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 65kW and 115Nm.

This is mated to a five-speed manual transmission connected to the front wheels, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 5.3l/100km.

With this update, motorists now have a second option with a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol block, which has a much higher output of 88kW and 170Nm.

This version is also front-wheel-drive, but gains a six-speed manual gearbox.

The naturally aspirated unit is found on the Pure+ and Adventure trim levels and features selectable City and Eco driving modes, while the turbo is reserved for the top-spec Accomplished+ and comes with a dedicated Sport calibration.

Features

Starting with the base Pure+ model, buyers can expect LED headlights, 15-inch wheels, all-electric windows, and central locking.

It also comes with a multifunction steering wheel, a 4-inch digital instrument cluster, four speakers, cruise control, air conditioning, a 65W USB Type-C charging port, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety fittings include ABS, six airbags, hill assist, electronic stability control, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring, reverse parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

Moving up to the Adventure will add automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, push-button start, a blind view monitor, a 360-degree camera system, automatic climate control, and a cooled glovebox.

Lastly, the Accomplished+ gets all the bells and whistles with 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, hill descent control, a wireless charging pad, four speakers, a larger 7-inch driver display and 10.25-inch infotainment screen, a sunroof, puddle lamps, “Galaxy” ambient lighting, a leather steering wheel, silver door handles, roof rails, and a rear spoiler.
