New Haval H7 launched in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

Haval is kicking off the new year with the launch of the new H7 – the flagship of its SUV series.

The H7 will initially be available in two specifications starting at R601,950, with the range-topping hybrid model to be introduced in the second quarter of 2025.

Features

The H7 departs from the design of the Jolion and H6 and adopts the aesthetic of many recent 4x4s.

This translates to a much blockier body, complete with a set of squared-off circular LED headlights and 19-inch dual-spoke alloys housed in angular wheel arches with riveted fenders.

Four colours are available at launch, including Grey, Hamilton White, Orange, and Sun Black, and and all models come standard with roof rails.

The H7 shares the same platform as the H6 but is larger in every dimension, measuring 4,705mm in length, 1,908mm in width, and 1,780mm in height.

Furthermore, it boasts a ground clearance of 210mm, an approach angle of 24 degrees, a departure angle of 30 degrees, and a break-over angle of 19 degrees.

“[The H7’s] off-road capabilities come close to those of some of our professional 4×4 models in the GWM stable,” said Conrad Groenewald, Chief Operating Officer of GWM South Africa.

Inside, the centerpiece is a floating 14.6-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster on the dash.

These displays can reach a brightness of over 1,000 nits – more than double that of most laptops – making it easy to read during treks at midday, with support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included.

Further down the centre console there is an aviation-style gearstick, as well as controls for the drivetrain, terrain assistance, and dynamic safety functions.

There are integrated grab handles for both the front and rear, and Haval claims that the doors offer the widest opening in its segment at more than one metre head-to-toe for incoming passengers.

Other standard features include electronically adjustable front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof.

This is on top of safety and assistance fittings such as six airbags, adaptive cruise control, traction control, cornering brake control, ABS, emergency brake assist, tyre-pressure monitoring, hill-descent control, parking sensors, and a 560-degree camera system that can display the road surface underneath the car.

The Super Luxury derivates are also treated to ventilated front seats with memory settings, genuine leather seat wrappings, a heads-up display, and a hands-free tailgate.

Engine

The two launch variants of the H7 are equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine generating 170kW and 380Nm.

This is paired to either a front-wheel or four-wheel-drive (4WD) setup, depending on the trim level, and both units make use of a nine-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Anyone who picks up the 4WD units can access a unique off-road mode on the driver display, which provides a bird’s-eye view of their surroundings, as well as an AI-enhanced image of the surface below the SUV.

These models also come with terrain and driving settings for Grass/Gravel, Convex Roads, Sand, Snow, Mud, Sport, Standard, and Eco.

Furthermore, the 4WD options feature a rear differential lock and Off-Road Cruise Control, which offers the same functionality as a traditional low-range transfer case, said Haval.

Alternatively, buyers will be able to pick up the hybrid model in Q2, which combines a 1.5-litre plant with an electric motor to achieve a combined output of 179kW and 530Nm.

This is the same powerplant found on the H6 HEV, which achieves an average fuel consumption of 5.2l/100km.

The hybrid H7 is only available in front-wheel drive and uses the brand’s “Dedicated Hybrid Transmission” for gear shifts.
