Chery Omoda 5 crossover SUV coming to South Africa – Everything we know

The Chery Omoda 5 “crossover SUV” is coming to South Africa, and it’s expected to make its local debut at the Festival of Motoring between 26-28 August.

While this is not yet officially confirmed, Chery’s local subsidiary recently revealed on its social pages that “something great is coming” alongside a photo of the Omoda’s headlight.

Along with this, the automaker confirmed in December last year that the Omoda 5 is, in fact, coming to South African showrooms “in late-2022.”

As such, we can surmise that the Omoda 5 will likely be unveiled at the FoM at the end of the month, bringing Chery’s local line-up to a total of four models less than one year after the Chinese manufacturer re-entered our market.

What to expect

Chery’s Omoda 5 sits on a new “future-proof” platform that is “ready for all propulsion technologies,” said the company.

It is one of the first vehicles to use Chery’s next-generation architecture and can therefore support internal combustion engines, hybrid, electric, and green hydrogen systems.

The company has yet to reveal which options will be offered in the South African Omoda, but in Chinese markets, it’s sold with a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre as well as a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

At the moment, both these powertrains are available in Chery’s local offerings.

The 1.5-litre with between 83-108kW and 138-210Nm is currently fitted to the Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro, whereas the 1.6-litre with 145kW and 290Nm is found in the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro.

Moving inside, the Omoda’s cabin “promises to be a treat for the eyes as much as the exterior,” said the company.

Standard fitment will include two curved 10.25-inch displays, one for the driver and one for the infotainment system, while both front occupants will be sat in “integrated” sports seats.

The company also promises that “a comprehensive list of the most modern technologies and creature comforts” will accompany each Omoda 5, but has not said what this will include.

In China, it comes with systems such as intelligent headlight control, automatic emergency braking, as well as blind-spot monitoring.

“The Omoda 5’s platform also meets global 5-star safety ratings, proving that performance and adaptability do not have to come at the expense of safety or structural integrity,” said Chery.

The new crossover SUV then measures 4,400mm in length, 1,830mm in width, and 1,585mm in height – making it ever-so-slightly shorter, but wider than the Haval Jolion.
