R46,000 price cut for popular hatchback in South Africa

Mazda has announced a new promotional price for the Mazda 2, slashing its starting price by nearly R50,000.

The hatchback’s entry-level model, the Active, is now available for R289,900, pushing its price tag under the R300,000 mark and putting it in competition with nameplates like the VW Polo Vivo and Suzuki Swift.

More importantly, it represents a R46,100 price cut from the vehicle’s original sticker of R336,000, following an update in April 2026.

“The offer brings one of the most complete hatchbacks in its segment within reach of a wider group of South African motorists, and it does so without removing anything from the specification, the ownership plan or the driving experience that defines it,” said Mazda Southern Africa.

The cut makes it by far and away the cheapest Mazda on sale in South Africa, as the second most affordable model, the Mazda 2 Dynamic, asks for R371,300.

The carmaker said the new price is available for a limited period while stocks last.

Engine

Nothing about the Mazda 2’s spec sheet has been changed, meaning you can still expect the brand’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, despite the massive price reduction.

This develops 85kW and 148Nm, which is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox.

As a result, the hatchback achieves a relatively frugal fuel consumption of 5.7l/100km, giving it a range of 772km on its 44-litre tank.

Features

Even though it is the cheapest derivative, the Mazda 2 Active still comes with a decent amount of equipment.

It has two-tone 15-inch wheels, LED headlights, fold-away mirrors, electric windows, a 250-litre boot, central locking, and keyless entry and start.

It also has manual air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, cloth seats, six speakers, a 7-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ABS, and two front airbags.

“The Mazda2 Active has always offered more than its price suggests, and this promotion simply makes that easier to see,” said Deolinda Da Costa, Head of Marketing and Communications at Mazda Southern Africa.

“Nothing has been taken away to reach this number. The design, the driving experience, the standard specification and the ownership plan all remain exactly as they were.”

Pricing

The South African pricing for the updated Mazda 2 roster is as follows:

• Mazda 2 1.5 Active – R289,900 (New price)
• Mazda 2 1.5 Dynamic – R371,300
• Mazda 2 1.5 Individual – R417,300

This includes a 5-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, a 3-year/unlimited-kilometre service plan, and a 5-year roadside assistance plan.
