15 new hatchbacks that launched in South Africa in 2024

South Africa welcomed a slew of new hatchbacks in 2024 from the likes of Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Opel, Suzuki, and VW.

Audi added to the segment with the A1, A3, and S3 Black Editions, all with sleek styling and exclusive features that were previously classed as optional extras.

BMW brought us the all-new 1 Series, including the sporty M135 flagship model that can eclipse 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Likewise, the popular Suzuki Swift evolved into its fourth generation, sporting a new platform, engine, and features.

Meanwhile, the fan-favourite VW Polo Vivo finally received a mild facelift after being unchanged for six years, as did the Fiat 500, Honda Fit, Hyundai Grand i10, and Opel Crosa.

On the electric side of things, the local market welcomed the BYD Dolphin and Dayun Yuehu S5 all the way from China, as well as the Mini Cooper SE which, while it may be marketed as German, is built in China, too.

We were also supposed to get electric variants of the Fiat 500 and Abarth 595; unfortunately, however, these didn’t make it to our roads in 2024 for reasons unknown. Perhaps 2025 will be their year.
