All the new VWs that went on sale in South Africa this year

VW South Africa’s 2022 consisted of the launch of eight new vehicles in the form of one new MPV, one sedan, two hatchbacks, two crossovers, and two SUVs.

January saw the introduction of the new Caddy MPV in two body styles and with two engines catering to private as well as commercial customers.

In February, we got the automatic versions of the new Polo after the manuals went on sale two months prior, which was followed by the Tiguan Allspace in April – an extended version of the standard Tiguan that reached the market in June 2021.

An all-new model in an all-new category, the Taigo SUV Coupe, was unveiled in June, while the updated T-Roc reached dealers in July.

At long last, the Polo Sedan also received a serious upgrade in September.

Capping off the year on a high note was the launches of the sporty Tiguan R with the same motor as the upcoming Golf R, and the more affordable Golf GTI Jacara Edition that ditches the leather upholstery of the standard model for the iconic cheque-patterned cloth, in October.

What’s coming

In the first quarter of 2023, South Africa’s second-best-selling brand will introduce the hotly-anticipated new Amarok to the local market.

At launch, the bakkie will be available with at least three turbo-diesel engines producing either 110kW, 155kW, or 184kW depending on the model, the line-up consisting of the base “Amarok,” the mid-range Life and Style, and two top-spec versions in the form of the Aventura and PanAmericana.

Following the new double cab’s debut, the automaker has scheduled the launch of the potent Golf R hot hatch in the second half of the year.

With a 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol powerplant and four-wheel-drive setup, the 235kW Golf R hauls to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds with an optional drift mode also on offer to lets it kick loose around corners.

After 2023, VWSA’s new managing director and group chair, Martina Biene, confirmed that the subsidiary will look at producing a third product at its Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape alongside the ubiquitous Polo and Polo Vivo to offset the loss of exports to the European region as it continues its crackdown on internal combustion engines.

Biene confirmed that it will be of an SUV variety that will be “aimed at the African continent.”
