Tata Africa has achieved a significant milestone with the rollout of its 12,000 locally-assembled vehicle in South Africa.
The Indian automaker has a factory in Gauteng, which builds commercial vehicles for the local market.
“On 20 March 2026, Tata Africa, in partnership with Tata Motors, India’s leading multinational automobile manufacturer, marked a significant milestone with the rollout of the 12,000th locally assembled commercial vehicle from the Tata Africa’s Assembly Facility in Rosslyn, South Africa,” it said.
“The achievement underscores Tata Motors’ long-term commitment to South Africa’s manufacturing sector and its growing commercial vehicle ecosystem.”
The vehicle in question was a Tata Ultra T.14, which was unveiled during a ceremony before being handed over to RAM Couriers.
This delivery is part of a broader fleet agreement between the two companies.
Established in 2011, Tata Africa’s assembly facility in Rosslyn has been a vital part of the company’s goal to localise commercial vehicle production in South Africa.
The site itself is approximately 35,000 square metres and has an installed annual capacity of over 2,200 vehicles.
Tata noted that the factory has the flexibility to scale its production in line with market demand.
It currently produces a range of Tata Motors commercial vehicles, including the Ultra, Prima, and LPT ranges, as well as Tata Daewoo models.
“Built to modern manufacturing standards, the Rosslyn plant integrates structured quality processes, rigorous inspection systems and contemporary assembly practices to ensure consistent product excellence,” said the company.
Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles stated that it will continue to expand its dealer footprint across South Africa, improving accessibility and after-sales support.
“Today’s milestone reflects more than production scale. It represents the progress we have made together with our employees, partners and customers over many years,” said Jacques Taylor, Managing Director of Tata Africa Holdings.
“Facilities like these demonstrate how sustained investment in local capability, skills development and operational excellence can create meaningful impact within the industries and communities we serve.”
Tata Passenger Cars back in South Africa

Tata has maintained a commercial vehicle presence in South Africa for over a decade, but its passenger cars have been absent from the local market for some time.
However, this changed in August 2025 when Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles officially relaunched in South Africa with four new models.
The Indian manufacturer’s initial roster consists of two entry-level cars, the Tiago hatchback and Punch crossover, and two more upmarket offerings – the Curvv crossover coupe and the Harrier SUV.
These offerings have proven successful as well, as Tata sold 515 units in March 2025, putting it ahead of other brands such as Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Volvo.
Tata has also confirmed that two more models are coming to South Africa this year.
The first is the Nexon, a compact SUV that will slot between the Punch and the Harrier.
It is the best-selling SUV in India, and is expected to take on names like the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet when it arrives in South Africa.
The other confirmed model is the Sierra, which will serve as the brand’s penultimate model between the Curvv and the Harrier.
One of the brand’s newest cars, the Sierra will showcase Tata’s latest design language with features like “Night Saber” LED daytime running lights, flush door handles, and three screens on the dashboard for the instrument cluster, driver display, and front passenger display.
