South Africa gets another armoured vehicle – An intimidating Iveco truck

Building on a long list of armoured products, Pretoria-based SVI Engineering has debuted its newest bullet-resistant offering, the Iveco Trakker truck.

Rated at a B6 protection level, the armoured Trakker is capable of withstanding fire from assault rifles up to and including the AK47, R1, and R5.

The first unit has already been completed and delivered to its new customer, Bradford Wood of the K9 Law Enforcement group of companies, and it is now performing its duties of “transporting valuable cargo on behalf of the security specialist’s client,” said SVI.

Bespoke armour

The new B6 armouring solution for the Iveco Trakker was derived from the firm’s non-discreet Stopgun V2.0 kit for bakkies and trucks which is particularly popular in the security industry.

However, rather than installing the usual integrated door, fender, and pillar armour, SVI has opted to replace the entire cab with a fully-bespoke and “menacingly-styled” crew compartment in an effort to completely eliminate any potential ballistic gaps.

The unique cab construction protects engine components and includes a tilting nose plate to facilitate routine maintenance, “ensuring serviceability remains as close to that of the standard truck as possible, with minimal additional technician training thus required,” said SVI.

Moreover, ballistic glass has been fitted into each window frame with gunports on the sides, these being completely flat instead of curved to allow for effortless replacement should damage be sustained from an attack.

Optional run-flat tyre rings are available, too, said the company.

When all is said and done, the B6 treatment adds around 500kg to the weight of the Trakker 380 4×4.

Price

Pricing for the Iveco Trakker B6 armouring solution starts at R649,500 (excl. VAT) with a three-month build time to be expected, however, the exact prices and times will depend on the customer’s chosen specification.

“Though developed chiefly for clients carrying high-value cargo through areas of South Africa battling the latest wave in truck-hijacking crime, the Trakker’s load body design is adaptable to various customer requirements, meaning the vehicle can also be configured to function as an ambulance, a fire truck, or even an armoured bus,” said SVI.

Alongside the new Iveco, SVI also offers armouring packages for the popular Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser 300, the Ford Ranger, the Nissan Navara and Patrol, the VW Amarok, and the Hino 500 Series commercial truck.
