78 new crossovers and SUVs that launched in South Africa in 2024

The most popular body styles in South Africa, as many as 78 new SUVs and their smaller crossover counterparts were introduced to the market in 2024.

The model rollouts covered a wide price range, from the R270,000 Hyundai Exter all the way up to the R4-million Mercedes-Maybach EQS.

One of the more notable launches of the year comprised the new Toyota Prado. Now in its fifth generation, the SUV went on sale in June in three specifications and proved to be an instant hit, with buyers spending upwards of R900 million on the Toyota within its first month on sale.

Another big one was the new BMW X3, which entered its fourth generation and is being built right here at BMW’s Rosslyn factory.

Likewise, the year saw the return of the Ford Territory to South Africa which is now being assembled in China to offset costs, allowing the Blue Oval to compete in the volume sector once again.

Speaking of, the market welcomed several new entries from the People’s Republic, including the burly GWM Tank 300 and 500, the Jetour Dashing and X70 Plus, as well as the GAC Emkoo and Emzoom.

The high-performance category also saw some love from the likes of the new Lamborghini Urus SE and the Range Rover Sport Edition Two.

On the more affordable end of the spectrum, Chery debuted its new Tiggo Cross which is, in fact, a facelifted version of the Tiggo 4 Pro.

The company explained that the Tiggo 4 Pro is so popular in its current form that it saw no reason to replace it with a newer model, hence, it now sells the Tiggo Cross alongside it.

Citroen also honed in on the budget segment with the launch of the new C3 Aircross.
